Report: Syrian group could pose bigger threat than ISIS

A shadowy Syrian group could pose as great a threat to the West as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to a recent report.

Counterterrorism officials say the Khorasan group, led by a former confidante of Osama bin Laden, might have its sights set on targets in the United States and other Western countries, The New York Times reported Saturday.

"In terms of threat to the homeland, Khorasan may pose as much of a danger as the Islamic State,” James Clapper, director of national intelligence, said Thursday, according to the Times.

Citing unidentified "law enforcement and military officials," the Times reported that the Syria-based group is composed of al Qaeda fighters originating from the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa.

The group is led by Muhsin al-Fadhli, a 33-year-old Kuwaiti who was one of the few al Qaeda operatives who knew of the 911 attacks before they happened, according to the Times, citing State Department officials. Little else is known about the group.

The report arrives as Congress's gaze has been laser focused on the ISIS threat and President Obama is poised to expand air strikes against ISIS forces operating in Syria.
