OTTAWA— Canada will close its embassy in Syria.
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird made the announcement Monday following a weekend where he condemned a continuing blockade against humanitarian aid preventing it from reaching citizens in the besieged city of Homs.
The announcement also came on the same day the federal government announced a new round of economic sanctions against Syria. Baird also reiterated calls for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, saying that the sanctions wouldn’t be lifted until the president handed over power.

“The continuing, appalling violence perpetrated by the Assad regime on the people of Syria compels us to again tighten the vice on those responsible,” Baird said in a statement.
“These additional measures include a complete ban on the provision or acquisition of financial or other related services, as well as sanctions on the Syrian central bank and seven high-ranking Syrian officials implicated in the violence.
“Our message remains clear: Assad must go.”
