Two families have been shot dead in Syria as they fled the north-western province of Idlib in a bus, trying to reach the border with Turkey.

Opposition supporters in Syria say the two families were near the town of Sermin, close to the Turkish border, when Syrian forces opened fire.

At least 10 people on board were killed, including two women and three children.

The bus victims were among more than 60 people killed across Syria on Thursday (local time), according to rights groups.

Another teenage boy died and dozens more were wounded in an assault on Sermin itself.

Activists say army troops also attacked a string of other towns in Syria, killing people in areas including Idlib, Homs, Hama and Daraa.

Twelve civilians, five rebel gunmen and seven soldiers were reportedly among the dead in Homs.

Rebel fighters also struck more military posts and threatened to launch a series of strikes in and around Damascus.

The latest fighting comes a day after the UN Security Council passed a statement calling on Syrian president Bashar al-Assad to end the violence against his people.

The statement warns of further international action against Syria if it does not end the bloodshed and allow aid workers to reach the wounded and others in need.

But the Syrian regime has dismissed the UN plan as toothless.

The UN says well over 8,000 people have been killed in Syria in the past year.

The Assad regime blames the bloodshed on "armed terrorist gangs".

Meanwhile, Mr Assad's wife Asma al Assad is facing travel bans and a freeze on any European assets in a new round of sanctions against various Syrian figures.

The president's British-born and educated wife has been criticised for her love of luxury goods and consumption amid the ongoing violence.

She is on a list of 12 Syrians to be considered by EU foreign ministers today as part of a decision to bar them from travel and freeze any foreign bank accounts they hold in any of the 27 member nations.

Among the 12 are other members of the Assad family. Mr Assad himself was targeted by sanctions last May.

EU ministers will also decide whether to impose sanctions on two new Syrian companies.
