BAGHDAD—Iraqi authorities imposed a curfew on Najaf and deployed additional security forces after protesters stormed and burned the Iranian consulate in the southern Iraqi city in a show of anger against Tehran’s involvement in the country’s affairs.
The escalation of violence in the Shiite Muslim pilgrimage city has raised the risk of a more forceful response from security forces to end a monthslong antigovernment uprising.
