As Beijing prepares for its biggest military parade in years today, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry has published a lists of trigger points for a Chinese invasion.
In the report — for the Legislative Yuan — the ministry lists potential triggers, including a declaration of independence.
It suggests Beijing may send the People’s Liberation Army across the Taiwan Strait if massive civil unrest erupted, Taiwan obtained nuclear weapons or if foreign troops were deployed on the island.
Further triggers could include foreign intervention in Taiwan’s internal affairs, or even delays in cross-strait unification talks.
The timing of the report appears not to have been prompted so much by the parade marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II as by the Taiwanese election campaigns, with the country going to the polls on January 16.
The presentation can be viewed as the ministry’s bid to get the incumbent Kuomintang and the opposition Democratic Progressive Party, the latter well ahead in most polling, to commit to increased military budgets.
The ministry stressed that “despite detente across the strait in recent years, Beijing has never given up the idea of using force to achieve Taiwan’s unification with China”.
Evidence, it said, included a series of exercises conducted at a training base in Inner Mongolia in July, which the ministry alleged used replicas of Taiwan’s presidential office and other key Taiwanese hubs as targets.
The ministry said that besides direct military operations, an alternative strategy would be to blockade Taiwan.
It pointed out that China’s military spending is rising 10 per cent this year, to the second-highest amount in the world after the US. “The imbalance in military strength across the strait has sharply widened,” it said.
