Iraq suffered its deadliest year since the 2011 pullout of U.S. forces, and Syria totaled 2014 casualties in the tens of thousands amid U.S. military operations in both countries, according to reports.
The United Nations said Friday that 12,282 civilians were killed in Iraq in 2014, more than two-thirds of that total after the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) began expanding in the middle of the year.
Hundreds of members of Iraq security services were killed in December violence alone. The Iraqi military and Kurdish forces have been battling ISIS fighters on the ground with the support of the United States.
It was the deadliest year in Iraq since the sectarian violence that seized the nation in 2006 and 2007.
In Syria, the civil war claimed the lives of 76,000 people, The New York Times reported, citing a human right group whose tallies it could not independently verify. More than 3,500 of the deaths were children.
The United Nations no longer tracks deaths in Syria. Since this summer, a U.S.-backed coalition has been conducting airstrikes against ISIS targets in both Iraq and Syria.
The U.S. also has armed forces in both nations.
But in Syria, that intervention has been designed mainly to stop ISIS. The Obama administration is reportedly planning a recalibration of that strategy that may include a plan to remove Syrian President Bashar Assad.
