Libyan Rebel Council to Open Office in Washington

US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman at a press conference in the Libyan rebel stronghold eastern city of Benghazi on May 24, 2011
A top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East says the Libyan rebel's Transitional National Council has accepted an invitation from U.S. President Barack Obama to open a representative office in Washington
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman said Tuesday in the Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi that the United States is no longer speaking with Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. He said the U.S. considered the opposition council as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people, stopping short of granting formal recognition to the TNC.
The high-ranking U.S. diplomat is on a three-day visit to Libya and is the most senior U.S. official to visit the country since the uprising against Gadhafi began in February.
The diplomatic invitation comes as NATO warplanes rocked the Libyan capital, Tripoli, with some of its heaviest airstrikes yet.
Witnesses heard at least 15 explosions in the city as NATO warplanes roared overhead Tuesday. A Libyan government spokesman says the latest strikes killed at least three people and wounded dozens more.
On Monday, Britain and France announced that they plan to deploy attack helicopters to join the NATO air campaign. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe Monday said the deployment falls within the United Nations mandate to protect Libyan civilians. NATO says use of the helicopters will allow more precise targeting of Gadhafi's military.

It seems that US is still hesitated to grant TNC formal recognition because the situation in Libya is ongoing and Gaddafi loyalists are fighting on the ground . US has had got experience about the repercussion of arming Rebel before arming Libyans Rebels which could lead to other troubles specially in area such Libya which comprised of various tribes which are ready to fight for throne and wealth .

Look at Southern Sudan how tribes and dissents are fighting to gain wealth which we can not anticipate where is the situation going to end up . Any more rash steps could be costly and painful specially that Gaddafi and his sons knew their tribes probably and they knew how to gain their satisfactions and ambitions . I think that NATO support is an important element to make power of Rebels be outweighed .

Use of the helicopters will allow more precise targeting of Gadhafi's military but it will cost Britain and France heavy budget in this critical period .

Britain and France are the object of evil deeds to Africans,And God in heaven will not let any of you go free from the killings of innocent souls in Libya, which civilians are you protecting, the people you are killing already with your air strike, just because of Libyan OIL,you are fooling yourself ok..
24-05-2011 Wait and see when these rebels turn on NATO and USA. Majority of Libyans are supporting Gaddafi so why USA is trying to introduce tyranny of minority rebels on the majority of the population ? USA and NATO must be stopped before this kind of foreign intervention becomes common in the world.

The “bloodbath story” was just a pretext … an excuse for an attack. Tell me … if there is a “humanitarian” crises …Within one week they have destroyed the entire Air Force of the country … they are destroying the entire military and armed forces of the country … and they are gladly showing us that live! Is a full scale invasion of the country a solution to a humanitarian crises?? Read more here: http://godinthejungle.com/index.php/the-story/350-friday-april-01-2011.html

I think this is going to back fire and I really hope it does. Shame on Obama. Lesson 101 "Never abandon your nuclear program"

NATO fight and make sure that Gahdafi govt surrender. and capture Gahdafi alive.
24-05-2011 Well, BO can't figure out how to fix this country or won't. So with the Elections just around the corner why not try to fix another? What a joke....
24-05-2011 Hey, come on now. There have been other anti-authority, Al Qaeda-sympathetic groups that have been waiting longer for special treatment and privileged access to Washington than these guys. It isn't fair!

Last world war was a coalition, NATO is nothing short of that but on Libya they'll tell you it's for the innocent civilians. Since when does depleted uranium weapons help innocent civilians? What's the difference between an innocent civilian who protests in support of Gaddafi and those innocent civilians who don't, nothing but NATO thinks otherwise. May their oil dry up before your eyes and perhaps those same eyes will see the true problems of this world start with your own actions.

How can people say this is over oil? Do they not realize that all these nato countries have their own oil? Granted its more expensive to drill, it is still much cheaper than funding a revolution. Plus....if this was about oil nato would have backed Ghadaffi to ensure stability.

To say that NATO and USA are protecting civilians in Libya is not right. To say that NATO and USA are killing civilians in Libya is right. All people around the world must march against these criminal acts. The bombing of innocent people in a small country that can not respond is a crime against humanity.NATO and USA do not have souls.

BRING THE NUTTER IN - STOP KILLING INNOCENTS (ALL SIDES) - AND LET MY PARTNER (IN NAVY) COME HOME.
24-05-2011 @Common sense: why automatically believe that NATO is acting rationally?

I don't know NATO's or the US long term intentions in Libya but I do know as a citizen of Benghazi Libya that they saved us from the madman Gadhafi and his hired foreign mercenaries who are systematically abducting, raping and massacring innocent Libyans - men, women and children alike. This malicious despot is a shame to Libya and to humanity as a whole and anyone who supports him is a part of his sadistic killing machine - blow him to Kingdom Come NATO!
24-05-2011 mugabi (Rwanda)
we now can see who the rebels are"Libyan rebels to open offices in Britain"
24-05-2011 @Tawfik Mansurey: I'm not so sure about the part where anyone who supports him is part of a sadistic killing machine. I support him on the basis of basic rights and national sovereignty, and I'm the voice that people have listened to whenever they ended up with foreign policy that works.
24-05-2011 Proper Libya Welcome to USA
This is a good news for all of us. We want Libya to be a good member of the International Community and create a government that is ruled by law and governs according to the need of all Libyans. Establish a constitution that protects all Libyans rights, the goat hearder from Sabah and the MD Dr. from Tripoli must have equal rights under the new Libyan law. Gaddafi's end will bring a new era of freedom for all peaceloving and law abiding Libyans.
24-05-2011 Simba (USA)
This is a travesty and a direct affront to the rule of law. The US, NATO, the UN have all thrown out any reason for laws. Everyone is happy to look the other way as a false-pretense mission to "protect civilians" quickly devolved to arming and funding the rebels, deposing Gadhafi by direct force, recognizing a new "transitional government" by whom it was admitted we knew nothing about just a month ago. This will be the fate of all countries who oppose America's "moral interests".
24-05-2011 A constitution only has power if you follow what it says. A constitution that protects everybody's rights also protects the rights of a 40-year ruler.
