JULIA Gillard can expect a call from Barack Obama within the next week or so to discuss the death of Osama bin Laden.
US ambassador Jeffrey Bleich today assured Australians the Prime Minister had not been overlooked by the President, suggesting Mr Obama had been fairly busy in recent days.

The President called UK Prime Minister David Cameron before announcing the death of the al-Qa'ida leader on Monday, but is yet to speak to Ms Gillard.

“The President will be speaking with the Prime Minister and he is looking forward to it,” Mr Bleich told ABC News.

“As you know these are dramatic events with lots of things going on simultaneously and there is no significance to the order in which these calls occur.”

Australia is a major US ally in its “war or terror”, with 1550 military personnel deployed in Afghanistan.

Mr Bleich said US forces had been prepared to take bin Laden into custody but that he had chosen not to surrender.

“He chose not to do it and these are the consequences,” he said.
