Dan Rather reported on CBS that Bin Laden was admitted to a Pakistani hospital on 9/10. His mansion was just yards from the Pakistan version of West Point. The CIA admits they watched his home for over 8 months. I feel we knew where he was, or knew how to find him all along. For Bush keeping him alive was very useful as a straw man to further his war ambitions. For Obama this seals his re-election and marginalizes Trump [and any other republican]. Very convenient timing. Not a conspiracy, just a well know fact that government doesn't always tell the truth, or at least all of it.

Now that he is dead though, Bush's claims that he was in league with Saddam, who had WMD's just seems like such an obvious lie, and it is clear the problems in Afghanistan are are a civil war and have nothing to do with terrorism or Bin Laden. There is no reason to keep those 50,00 troops [and 100,00 contractors] in Iraq, or the 100,000 troops [plus contractors] in Afghanistan. If we can't afford helping the sick, old, or poor/unemployed then by all means we can't afford these unnecessary immoral wars one day longer.

Mr. Obama, bring those troops home!

Agreed. But luck--when it is tossed into the field unannounced and in the form of the merest sliver of opportunity--demands a special alertness if we are to detect it, and extensive planning and preparation if we be able to take advantage of it. It is because President Obama emphatically placed the highest priority on alertness and preparation that our intel and our military were ready when the moment came.

I am greatly surprised by your article. Even more so because you have dealt with South Asia for the US Govt. You know how tightly Pakistan is controlled by the military and intellegence services. The civilian govt. is a convenient facade to carry out their will.

You give too much credit to bin Laden's smarts and luck and sympathy of the local poulation, while completely ignoring the fact that there was a much larger support and network in Pakistan's establishment. Period..

There is no way some of our supposed arab friends didn't know where he was. Osama has more than 50 siblings. Some of them attended weddings of his children. The Bin Ladens claimed they disowned him but this is simply not true for all of them. If they were serious they could have worked across the spectrum of the family from those who loathed him to those who loved him to find his location. Like all Saudis they are silent in the face of terror which they encourage and finance. If the Pakistanis think they have any credibility after this they are dead wrong.

It would seem that "hiding in plain sight" is not too far fetched. Consider the stories of the individuals who had daughters and further offspring held as sex slaves for years right in the same house as their regular families. It is entirely likely someone can live a very secluded existence right under everyone else's noses. The difference here is that Bin Laden seemed to be kept under wraps so tightly that no one was close to getting the reward money for nearly a decade....somehow, that smacks of some collaboration by the Pakistani authorities. Surely someone must have known and turned a blind eye to what was going on.....

Luck? Like Lotto luck (e.g. sit around and wait to see if you're a winner)???

Sounds like this professor didn't read the news accounts. They suggested it had a lot more to do with patience and hard investigative work than "luck".

But, if I had an axe to grind for the previous administration, I guess I'd go with "luck" too.

Bush dropped the ball early in the game. Bin Laden wasn't a priority to him; Saddam Hussein was. To Bush and Rove, the Iraq war was much more important so W could silence anyone who disagreed with him as "unpatriotic" and so he could run as a "war president" in 2004.

The reason it took so long to get bin laden is the total incompetence of George W. Bush and his gang of rich neo-con's.

The cost has been incredible. We haven't even figured out how to win against his movement, because we never saw it as a movement. Maybe his death will produce a few less terrorists, but what we need is NO terrorists. Juts peace after 10+years of draining, mind-numbing crap from bin Laden's community.

I think that it took so long to find bin laden because it is a political war, much like Vietnam was.

I firmly believe the US and other gov'ts knew where he was for quite some time. Years perhaps. Certainly Pakistan has no credibility whatever on claiming they did not know where he was. This compound was built like a fortress, that would have raised suspicions of neighbors and others, let alone police and intelligence services, including those of US operatives in the area. The US gov't under Bush and to some extent Obama had good reason to keep him alive. They could further their intel by watching his and his cohorts movements. Plus, an alive Osama was a rich source upon which to continue the hideously expensive war on terror and the hundreds of billions spent on DOD, Homeland Security and other programs that have lined the pockets of US corporations. At some point recently, the political calculation in the US tipped towards bin Laden being worth more dead than alive to the US/Pakistani relationship.

It's true that someone in the Pakistani establishment must have known whre Bin Laden was, and been provding at least limited support. But this dose not necessarily extend to the governement, which has only limited control over its military, and less over its intelligence services. The Pakistanis may be bad allies, but as long as they have a nuclear arsenal, we need to try and keep our alliance intact. A failed state in Pakistan would be unthinkable.

Bin Laden should be placed more precisely than what is usual if we want to understand him. He was the creation of the US, Pakistan, UK and the Saudis against the communist infidels in Afghanistan where, like already in Saudi Arabia, the Americans replaced then the Soviet or Russian forces. He was also an asset for the Pakistanis, included against the Indian influence in Kabul. Besides, he served as an inspiration in the Balkans and in the Russian Caucasus, its other republics with Muslim majorities. His value there, or for Pakistan, has not been understood. Even for the US he was valuable as an enemy.

But the times have changed like those values. The dream of the new Islam Calif has proved weaker than the more modernist aspirations of the youth of those countries. Even the Muslim Brotherhood, opposed by Bin Laden, seem ready to accept position as a force behind a political party. In Pakistan itself the political leaders hardly appreciate the continued killings of their liberals. Even their relations with India are getting normalized.

So it was the time to get rid of the old and physically sick symbol who had, besides, defined himself as an extremist, or was at least generally believed to be one. He had served his purpose. It is a bit of a pity had he had to go away so rapidly and completely. He might have got a tale, or tales, to tell, if he had got the chance to defend his convictions in a court.

Even if we do depend on luck, whether the Lotto type luck or the enemy slipped up type luck, an incompetent administration would still not succeed in capturing or killing bin Laden. Before 9/11 W's team did know, more or less, where bin Laden was. At Tora Bora Rummy and his horde surely knew where bin Laden was. Did they manage to do anything about him? Oh yes, they, especially Cheney, managed to pull the resources and invade Iraq! Remember the al Qaeda operative meeting Saddam's operative in Prague argument?

I think the professor should give credit where credit is due instead of crediting luck alone!

I absolutely agree with post # 8. As punishment for its treachery, Pakistan's borders should be redrawn as shown in the link in post # 8 and must be denuclearized by force. That's the only way to ensure that the Af-Pak region does not become a breeding ground for terrorists and does not threaten the West again. I hope we (US and NATO) have the balls to do it.

It took several years to find bomber Eric Rudolph, who was eventually found be accident near the woods where he had been believed to be hiding. It is not easy to find somebody who does not want to be found and is careful about his movements.

Stop the Bush Bashing. Politicians take credit when things go right and pass it off by blaming others when thinks go wrong. Had this Bin Ladin mission failed it would have been twisted into blame Bush because of some of his admnistrations bad intelligence. The results of the next election will not depend on foreign affairs. Former President Clinton gave us the turth about American elections.....its the economy stupid.
