Fauci Ally's Guilty Plea Renews COVID Scrutiny

The guilty plea last week of a key player in Dr. Anthony Fauci's inner circle at the National Institutes of Health has renewed scrutiny of the former top infectious disease official and what he knew about efforts to conceal records related to the origins of COVID-19, the Washington Examiner reported Monday.
Dr. David Morens, 78, a former senior adviser to Fauci, pleaded guilty Aug. 18 to a federal conspiracy charge stemming from a scheme to evade Freedom of Information Act requests and federal records laws involving coronavirus research grants.
Morens was indicted in April after a congressional investigation scrutinized his efforts to assist Dr. Peter Daszak, his friend and head of the research firm EcoHealth Alliance, after the NIH terminated funding for a bat coronavirus project that included work at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.
According to the Department of Justice, Morens admitted conspiring with others to help restore the terminated grant and counter claims that COVID-19 leaked from a laboratory. The conspirators agreed to conceal their communications from public disclosure by using Morens's personal Gmail account instead of his government email address.
Morens also admitted conspiring with a co-conspirator to pay illegal gratuities.
The co-conspirator gave Morens wine for his "behind-the-scenes shenanigans," and Morens identified an official act he could perform to "deserve" the gift: writing a scientific commentary in a prominent medical journal advocating that COVID-19 had natural origins, according to prosecutors. The co-conspirator also suggested providing Morens other things of value, including meals at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris, New York, and Washington.
Morens faces up to five years in prison.
