Socialism, communism, and fascism: Different names, same deadly roots

For decades, Americans have been told that socialism is the gentle, compassionate alternative to the horrors of communism and fascism. This claim is not merely wrong. It is a dangerous historical falsehood.

The truth is simpler and more sobering: Socialism, communism, and fascism all grow from the same ideological soil — the collectivist vision advanced by Karl Marx. They differ in branding, tactics, and national flavor, but they share a core rejection of individual rights, private property, and limited government. Once in power, each has produced the same pattern: concentrated authority, suppression of dissent, and widespread human suffering. 

Vladimir Lenin was an explicit Marxist who built the Soviet state on the seizure of the means of production and the elimination of political opposition. Benito Mussolini began as a prominent socialist, editing a major socialist newspaper, before developing fascism as a nationalist variant of the same collectivist impulse. Adolf Hitler led the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. The Nazis used socialist language, attacked free-market capitalism, and imposed extensive state direction over the economy while crushing independent centers of power. These were not coincidences of personality. They reflected a shared belief that the state, guided by an “enlightened vanguard,” must override individual liberty in the name of a higher collective purpose.
