HONG KONG—Police fired tear gas and charged protesters who occupied Hong Kong’s legislature on the anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese sovereignty, as a movement that had until now largely stuck to nonviolent means lurched toward anarchy.
Protesters who had stormed the city’s legislature earlier on Monday evening, spray-painting graffiti on a wall inside, retreated as police retook the building and dispersed the crowds. By 1 a.m. the streets were emptied of demonstrators.
