Iran’s Revolutionary Guard seizes British oil tanker in Gulf amid escalating tensions

Iran has attacked and seized a British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz with 23 crew on board as the Middle Eastern nation taunted the US by claiming it must have shot down its own drone.

A British-flagged Swedish owned tanker has been seized by Iran with 23 crew on board and was heading for the Revolutionary Guard base at Qeshm, early Saturday morning (AEST).

A second oil tanker, the the British-operated, Liberian-flagged Mesdar, turned sharply north towards Iran’s coast on Friday afternoon after passing westward through the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf, according to Refinitiv tracking data.

There was no immediate word from the Guards about the second tanker or from the operator of the second tanker on what had prompted the change in direction along the vital international oil shipping route.

Northern Marine, a subsidiary of Stena AB, confirmed “hostile action” had occurred before the tanker Stena Impero changed its course, The Sun reports.

Stena Bulk and Northern Marine Management said in a statement that it “can confirm that ... our managed vessel Stena Impero was attacked by unidentified small crafts and a helicopter while transiting the Strait of Hormuz while the vessel was in international waters.”

“We are presently unable to contact the vessel which is now tracking as heading north towards Iran,” the statement said.

Just a few days ago Iran’s supreme leader had threatened Britain with retaliation over what he described as the “vicious” seizure of an Iranian oil tanker near Gibraltar by UK forces.

Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused Britain of “piracy” after the Royal Marines seized a supertanker believed to be carrying Iranian crude oil to Syria on July 5.
