More Than 1,000 Detained in Moscow Protest
Demonstration is the latest in recent weeks, suggesting growing public discontent with President Vladimir Putin’s government

MOSCOW—Authorities in Moscow detained more than 1,000 people protesting the exclusion of opposition candidates from city elections, a sign of growing public discontent as trust in President Vladimir Putin declines.
Thousands turned out for Saturday’s unauthorized protest, which city officials had warned would be met with a stern response. Swarms of police in riot gear strong-armed demonstrators to prevent them reaching the mayor’s office. Some protesters were hit with batons before being shoved into buses.
