Anti-Semitic scandal at the New York Times isn’t surprising

After finally apologizing for running an anti-Semitic cartoon in its international edition, The New York Times now promises to “evaluate” how the bone-headed decision was made. I hereby offer the gumshoes a time-saving answer.

It’s your agenda, stupid.

Without it, the cartoon never would have been considered. Because of it, the editors have only themselves to blame for this historic outrage.

The agenda is the paper’s politics, and when it comes to President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the agenda is ruthlessly consistent. The Times hates — hates — everything about both leaders.

Contempt oozes from supposedly straight news stories about them. Disgust drips from virtually all opinion pieces.

It would be reasonable if these were mere political disagreements. After all, there is nothing exceptional about a newspaper using its left-wing editorial page to oppose the policies of conservative politicians.

But that’s not what’s going on at the Times. As I’ve written repeatedly, the paper has abandoned all standards of fairness and balance when it comes to Trump. It considers him unfit and sets out each day to prove its case, finding in even routine decisions and comments evidence of his moral depravity.

On most days, the paper that prides itself on its history of defending the First Amendment lapses into parroting Democrats’ talking points about the president, thus forfeiting even the pretense of independence.

As night follows day, the standard-free ethos has spread to the entire paper. From front page to last, nearly everything in the Times now comes with an implicit opinion that conforms to the party line.
