Alabama governor signs bill banning nearly all abortion

Alabama’s governor on Wednesday signed into law the most restrictive abortion legislation in the nation, triggering a fight likely bound for the US Supreme Court.
Gov. Kay Ivey said the Alabama Human Life Protection Act “stands as a powerful testament to Alabamian’s deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God.”
The law, which goes into effect in six months, makes abortion a Class A felony, punishable by up to 99 years in prison for doctors.
It bans the medical procedure in nearly all cases — even rape and incest — with an exception only if pregnancy would pose a “serious health risk” to the woman.
The sponsors of the bill have said their intent is to challenge Roe v. Wade at the Supreme Court.
