A trade war hurts China more and other commentary

Free marketer: A Trade War Hurts China More

Critics of President Trump’s mounting tariffs against China claim the US will end up suffering the greater losses. But “China is probably in the more vulnerable position,” argues Tyler Cowen at Bloomberg. Tariffs on Chinese goods translate to higher prices for American consumers, for now, but in “a few years, a country such as Vietnam will provide the same products, perhaps at cheaper prices,” notes Cowen. In other words, the pain to the US consumer from a trade war is likely to be temporary, whereas “the lost business in China will be permanent.” Plus, without a trade deal with America, China can’t present itself to investors as a place that doesn’t cheat and steal intellectual property. Cowen concludes: “Next time you hear that the costs of the trade war are simply being borne by Americans, be suspicious.”


Bigotry watch: The Democrats’ Anti-Semitic Rot

Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib infected Democrats with the “disease of anti-Semitism,” says Commentary’s Abe Greenwald. By failing to confront it directly, party leaders have permitted “the irreversible rot to set in.” Thus, once-responsible Democrats such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are “vigorously defending Tlaib’s recent lies about Arabs welcoming Jews after the Holocaust.” Senior Democrats’ conduct, and that of their media allies, suggests “a defense pact is already in place that covers all calumnies against the Jews. Both the Democratic leadership and the liberal-media establishment will back these bigots against any and all charges of anti-Semitism in return for smooth relations with the social-justice left.”
