Donald Trump "will do everything in his power" to stop a refugee deal forged between Australia and the US, a Texan Republican congressman says.

Congressman Brian Babin has called the deal made between Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and out-going President Barack Obama "madness" and does not expect it will proceed when Trump moves into the White House.

The conservative hardliner believes no refugees in Australian detention camps on Nauru or Manus Island will be resettled in the US, Fairfax reports.

The deal, hammered out only two months ago, is unlikely to be pushed through before President-elect Trump assumes office on January 20 due to the US Department of Homeland Security's slow vetting process.

Congressman Babin said he was certain Trump would spike any planned resettlements overseen by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees due to a perceived threat to American citizens.

"I am confident President-elect Trump will do everything in his power to put an immediate stop to this secret Australian-US refugee deal that should have simply never happened in the first place," the Texan told Fairfax, slamming the "behind closed doors" agreement.

"This secret deal to import dangerous refugees into the US is exactly what the American people soundly rejected in November with the election of Donald Trump."

The deal was to see Australia resettle refugees from Central America's "northern triangle", including El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, currently living in camps in Costa Rica.

Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has remained tight-lipped on the whole situation.

A spokesman for prime minister told Fairfax Turnbull was confident the deal would proceed, a view backed some Australian diplomats.

Others believe the prime minister should explore alternatives given Trump's campaign prognostications about refugees and foreigners, including a oft-repeated blanket ban on all Muslim immigration.
