Enrique Peña Nieto Put in Tough Spot by Donald Trump Mexican leader has to balance national pride with the risk of harm to his country’s vital U.S. trade

MEXICO CITY—When Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s aides urged him last summer to confront Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump over vowing to build a border wall and saying Mexico was sending rapists to the U.S., Mr. Peña Nieto declined.

“I may have this guy sitting across the table from me someday, and I need to think about Mexico’s interests,” he said, according to an aide who witnessed the exchange.
