Asia wants more US leadership: Bishop

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is set to make the case for more US leadership in Asia, amid ongoing tensions over the South China Sea and fears of American isolationism.

"Australia believes that now is the time for the United States to go beyond its current engagement in Asia, to support Asia's own peace, and to capitalise on the era of opportunity that long-term US investment has already created," Ms Bishop will say in a speech on Friday in Los Angeles.

She will call for US President Donald Trump to attend this year's East Asia summit in the Philippines, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
