Cocaine haul on Chinese ship nabbed off Tasmania valued at $60m

A boat intercepted off the coast of Tasmania last week was carrying more than $60 million worth of cocaine, police say.
About 186 kilograms of cocaine was seized from a 50-metre commercial vessel which was escorted into Hobart on Friday.
HMAS Adelaide and the Australian Border Force tracked the ship for thousands of kilometres before the boat was intercepted 10 days ago in the Southern Ocean as it approached Tasmania.
Police said the packages had been compressed into bricks and wrapped in plastic.
Further testing will be conducted to test the purity.

The origin of the cocaine is not known but authorities said that given the size of the haul, it was unlikely it was destined for the Tasmanian market.
Ten men, aged between 23 and 50, were each charged with attempting to import a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, and face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
The men, who are all foreign nationals, have been refused bail and are scheduled to reappear on January 13.
