Hong Kong and southern China have hunkered down as Typhoon Nida swirled over the region, with hundreds of flights cancelled, schools closed and ferries halted.
Key points:
* Guangzhou issues its first-ever red storm alert
* Hong Kong issues its third-highest storm signal
* Cathay Pacific cancels all flights in and out of Hong Kong
Hong Kong raised a T8 storm signal — the third-highest — on Monday evening as the storm edged closer to the semi-autonomous Chinese city, packing winds of 130 kilometres per hour.
Guangzhou, the capital of neighbouring Guangdong province — where Nida is expected to make landfall today — issued its first-known red storm alert, with schools and outdoor work suspended.
