Aussie women win gold in 4x100m freestyle relay

Cate Campbell was confident even the great Katie Ledecky had "no chance" before anchoring Australia's women's 4x100m freestyle relay to Olympic gold in a world record time.

The title defence followed the triumph of compatriot Mack Horton who became the first Australian man since Ian Thorpe in 2004 to claim the Olympic 400m freestyle crown.

Horton edged Sun Yang in the 400m final on Saturday night, saying it was "a win for the good guys" in a swipe at his Chinese rival's past doping ban.

Australia's women then delivered on their favouritism in emphatic fashion as the nation defended its 4x100m freestyle crown from the London Games four years ago.

The women's relay team of Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie and siblings Bronte and Cate Campbell beat silver medallists the United States in the final, clocking 3 minutes 30.65 seconds, bettering Australia's previous world-best mark of 3:30.98 set at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
