Brothers in arms: China-Russia exercise in South China Sea

Where better for China and Russia to make a joint military, strategic and political statement than in the South China Sea, where the international law that both choose on occasion to deride has challenged key Chinese claims?

And when better than with the superpower they challenge, the US, and the super-conglomerate that is the European Union in deep political disarray during a dystopian American election and in the Brexit aftermath?

Next month, the two neighbours will stage a drill named Joint Sea in the South China Sea. Chinese defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujun describes it as a “routine exercise” aimed at strengthening co-operation, “not directed against third parties”. The Russian and Chinese navies held exercises in the Sea of Japan and the Mediterranean last year.
