Canada will begin launching airstrikes against ISIS in Syria "within days," the commander of Joint Task Force Iraq says.

Brig.-Gen. Daniel Constable declined to give a specific date, but said the final details are being put into place before the Canadian military begins expanding its operation from Iraq into Syria.

"I think we're going to be good to go in reasonable short order," Constable told a media briefing Thursday morning.

"The allies are excited about us getting into Syria as well because of our capabilities."

On Monday, the House of Commons passed the Conservatives' motion to extend Canada's six-month mission against ISIS in Iraq for a year and expand operations to neighbouring Syria.

The Liberals and the New Democrats opposed the motion and want Canada to contribute more humanitarian aid instead.

Constable said militants are becoming increasingly cagey and have changed tactics for transporting heavy equipment from Iraq into Syria.

"They're not showing themselves like they used to. They're starting to adapt."

He said militants are bringing equipment across the border in smaller loads in an attempt to conceal their activities from the air.

Canadian aircraft have performed more than 700 sorties in Iraq. Between March 24-29, CF-18 hornets destroyed improvised explosive devices, a weapons cache and supported Iraqi troops in ground attacks.

Constable said he is "very confident" Canada hasn't been responsible for any civilian casualties or collateral damage.

Defence Minister Jason Kenney said this week it will cost at least $528 million to extend the mission until April 2016.
