Turkey deports nine Britons who tried to cross into Syria allegedly to join jihadist militants

Turkey has deported nine Britons, including the son of a local British councillor, two weeks after arresting them for attempting to cross into Syria to join jihadists.

British police said 21-year-old Waheed Ahmed, the son of councillor Shakil Ahmed of the Labour opposition on Rochdale Borough Council, was one of nine members of the same family held in Turkey.

He was arrested by detectives at Birmingham Airport on Tuesday on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

A 31-year-old man from the same area was also arrested for the same offence.

The nine family members were taken by minibus from custody in the southern Turkey-Syrian border town of Adana on Sunday and put on two flights back to Britain, the Anatolia news agency said.

They were arrested in Turkey on April 1, with their case generating huge attention after it emerged that the group included four children and the son of a British local politician.

Shakil Ahmed issued a statement after the arrests in Turkey saying he thought his son had been on a work placement in Birmingham.

Turkey has been repeatedly criticised by its Western allies for not doing enough to halt the flow across Turkish territory of European nationals seeking to join Islamic State (IS) jihadists in Syria.

It has made a number of arrests in recent months in an apparent bid to deflect the criticism, and insists it is doing all it can to control the border.

Thousands of foreigners have joined the ranks of IS and other militant groups in Syria and Iraq, many of them crossing via Turkey.

Turkish and other security services estimate some 600 are Britons, including Mohammed Emwazi, dubbed "Jihadi John", who has appeared in several IS beheading videos.

About half of the 600 were thought to have returned home.
