Canadian Forces members are getting to know the Syrian territory and gathering intelligence before conducting more airstrikes against ISIS, their commander says.
Brig.-Gen. Daniel Constable told a media briefing Thursday no new Canadian airstrikes have been launched in Syria alongside the U.S.-led coalition since the first on April 8 that destroyed an ISIS garrison near Ar-Raqqah. Two short videos of the blast were declassified.
Constable said the missions have been conducted in a "very deliberate manner" so the pilots can get familiar with the new airspace and integrate with the coalition already operating in the area.
Canadian CF-18s have flown into Syria to observe potential targets, but the lack of Iraqi Forces there has made intelligence gathering more demanding, he said.
Constable said the operation, first launched in Iraq six months ago and extended into Syria last month, has helped decrease the terrorist group's sporadic attacks both in number and intensity.
"The airstrikes in Syria have definitely affected ISIS's freedom of movement in the area. The target that we struck will definitely serve to degrade their capabilities," he said.
Since the mission began, the Canadian Forces have flown 773 sorties — most with CF-18s.
Some Canadian troops will soon return home and be replaced one-for-one by other soldiers from bases across the country over six-to-eight weeks.
The mission is expected to continue until March 30, 2016.
