The Centre for World University Rankings has released its list of the world’s best universities, with only two Australian institutions making the top 100.




The Centre for World University Rankings has released its list of the world’s best universities.

The world’s top 10 comprised the usual suspects with Harvard University taking out the number one position. Other Ivy League universities Columbia, Princeton and Yale came sixth, ninth and tenth respectively.

The rankings showed significant favour towards American and British universities with only four in the top 30 coming from non-english speaking countries.

But Japan scored extremely well, with eight of its universities ranked in the top 100.

University of Tokyo received a world ranking of 13 and Kyoto was not far behind at number 16.

The methodology used to determine the rankings could explain the anglophonocentrism, with one criterion evaluating institutions on ‘alumni who currently hold CEO positions at the world’s top companies’.

Other determining factors included the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals, and the number of alumni who have won major international awards (relative to the university’s size).

Australia makes a disappointing debut much further down the list, with University of Sydney ranking as the 95th best in the world.

University of Melbourne is hot on its heels in spot 97.

The University of Queensland in Brisbane ranks as Australia’s third best university with its world ranking at 115.

Armidale's University of New England is the last Australian university to secure a spot in the top 1000, ranking 939th best in the world.
