*** Janet Daley was born in America where she began her political life on the Left as an undergraduate at Berkeley. She moved to Britain (and to the Right) in 1965 where she spent nearly twenty years in academic life before becoming a political commentator: all factors that inform her writing on British and American policy and politicians. ***
I'm sorry, but I laughed. I realise that jihadi terrorism is about the least humorous subject in the world and that the thought of British-born enthusiasts for this malevolent cause is peculiarly repugnant. But there was a point in the news coverage of the two would-be recruits to the Islamist struggle that was so comically absurd that it sounded like an episode of South Park.
It seems that before heading off, supposedly for Turkeybut actually to volunteer for the conflict in Syria, Yusuf Sarwar and Mohammed Ahmed found it necessary to place orders with Amazon for those invaluable treatises, Islam for Dummies, The Koran for Dummies and Arabic for Dummies. So apparently untutored were they in the justification for their possibly suicidal mission that they needed a crash course in what it was all about.
Hilarity aside, we should really (as they would say in South Park) learn something important from this. These two fantasists who were, thankfully, identified to the police by their horrified parents so that they could be arrested on their return to this country, were ready to join in a nihilistic adventure they knew so little about that they had to mug it up before they left. And that is one more example of the truth which earlier generations understood and allowed for: young men are dangerous. They are especially so when they band together even when (perhaps particularly when) they are in a band of only two. (The cases of two brothers or close friends turning into Boy A and Boy B in a wild, homicidal pact recurs too often for this to be a coincidence.)
In the past, before aggression and characteristically male behaviour was generally discouraged and suppressed, this tendency among young men was dealt with fairly efficiently. Competitive team sports (and competition of all kinds) in the school system, and military cadet corps – institutional supervised aggression which provided legitimate outlets for these impulses – were licensed and overseen by adult authority. Only the odd misfit or psychopath would have felt the need to veer off into lunatic anarchist or anti-social activity. But now our society appears to have decided that male aggression is so disreputable and damaging – so unquestionably inferior to the female virtues of conciliation and empathy – they must be expunged altogether from official recognition. And so the young men must go elsewhere for their thrills. Even if it involves doing some hasty homework on what the Koran actually says.
