Syrian president Bashar al-Assad boasted that the West needs to ally with him, claiming that only his regime can beat the Islamist group Isis, now renamed the Islamic State.
As the Iraq crisis deepens the West is already finding itself allied with Iran in the battle to hold up the sectarian regime of Nouri al-Maliki in Iraq against gains of the Islamic State.
Yet it was Assad’s regime that held back from attacking Isis militias, allowing the organisation to grow.
It suited the regime to allow Isis to attack what’s left of the popular opposition in Syria.

Last week ex foreign secretary William Hague was forced to admit British firms sold Syria chemicals which are used to make sarin in the 1980s.
