Polio epidemic could hit Syria

There are fears the deteriorating situation in Syria, could be the catalyst for an international outbreak of polio.

Six and a half million Syrian children living in the country or as refugees in other countries, now need urgent humanitarian assistance.

Dennis McKinlay from Unicef New Zealand says that's two million more than this time last year - and their need is greater than ever before.

He says Syria is having an extremely dry summer, which has lead to heavy demands on the limited safe water supply.

Dennis McKinlay says a shortage of food, shelter and sanitation is also making the crisis worse.

An outbreak of the disease is now an immediate threat, due to a lack of safe clean water, working infrastructure and regular rainfall.

Dennis McKinlay from Unicef New Zealand says the deteriorating situation is undermining years of hard work to try to contain the disease.

He says the world has been trying to eradicate polio and it had been limited to just four to six countries, but the Syrian conflict has made it a real threat in the Middle East.

Water-borne diseases like typhoid, hepatitis A and cholera are already on the rise.
