North Korea: Kim Jong-un 'issued first military order before father's death was announced'

Kim Jong-un, North Korea's new leader, issued his first military order just before his father's death was announced, suggesting he already has control of the armed forces, according to a report.

Jong-un ordered all units to halt field exercises and training and return to their bases, Yonhap news agency quoted a senior Seoul government source as saying.

"This is clear-cut evidence that Kim Jong-un has secured a firm grip on the military," the official was quoted as saying.

Pyongyang announced at noon Monday (0300 GMT) that leader Kim Jong-il had died of a heart attack two days earlier. State media has proclaimed his son as the isolated communist nation's new leader.

Comments by the head of the South's National Intelligence Service appeared to back up the Yonhap source.

Won Sei-hoon told parliament Tuesday that a North Korean unit test-fired two short-range missiles off its east coast before noon Monday.

But they cancelled their plan to launch more missiles in the afternoon and returned to base, Won said.

Jong-un was made vice chairman of the ruling party's Central Military Commission and a four-star general in September last year as his father groomed him for the succession.

The country's regular armed forces total 1.19 million and the regime has a Songun (military-first) policy prioritising its needs over those of civilians.

Other officials quoted by Yonhap said there was no unusual activity in border areas of the North, but more troops had been posted in the Joint Security Area around the border village of Panmunjom.

An intelligence official said the North may be trying to prevent defection attempts during the leadership transition.

Hundreds of people, many in tears, meanwhile flocked to the North Korean consulate in the Chinese border city of Dandong on Wednesday to pay their respects to the isolated country's late leader.

Mourners placed wreaths and bouquets of white and yellow flowers below a large portrait of Kim.

Many appeared to be from North Korea, and were wearing enamelled lapel pins bearing the likeness of Kim or his father, Kim Il-sung, on their winter coats and dark suit jackets.

Dandong, a city of 2.5 million people in northeast China, is the main portal for trade with impoverished North Korea, which depends heavily on its wealthier neighbour for oil and food.

Steady on! After all, he's a four-star General I believe. Besides, he's probably got around a dozen holes-in-one recently.

Where did they find this caricature? I have grandchildren whose hands are bigger than this character. I do hope that there is something going on in the brain box behind those lard-loaded cheeks or those twerp generals will have this goof as a snack. That is assuming that someone does not use one of those general's hats as a helicopter landing pad for a special forces landing zone.

For the sake of arguement, let us assume he learned something while in the West doing whatever he was doing. Does that mean he will take the lessons learned and try not to do something of remarkable stupidity? No. If it were not for his apparent possession of atomic weapons, this goof might be fun to watch. What does worry me is that he really might have the access needed for the weapons and the stupidity to use them. I really doubt that he has ever seen combat at a close and personal level to really understand the horrors of what is involved

Kin Jong-un went to school in the west so he knows westerners and our culture. I'm sure he will continue the despotic rule of his father just as Bashar Assad did. The younger Assad also was western educated and oriented but that did not stop him from his brutal ways. We should expect the same from Un. Too bad.

The Headline should read:
The Chinese owners of the N.Korean Army take control of Kim Jong Un.

They promoted him from Civilian to 4 Star General, first day on the job.
(he must be a quick study)
But I've got a feeling, this guy isn't gonna last very long.
All those old Generals in their over-sized hats are not looking to happy with Dear New Leader.
