•'His actions were necessary'
The lawyer for a Norwegian right-wing extremist who killed 77 people says the murderer shows no sign of remorse.

Norwegian right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in twin attacks in July, still shows no sign of remorse.

"He says he does not regret these actions. That is of course a message that is difficult to convey, but he is very clear on this point... He believes it was necessary," his lawyer Geir Lippestad told the TV2 News Channel on Monday.

"He thinks his actions were atrocious but necessary," the lawyer said, reiterating phrasing used several times to describe his client's deeds.

Now in custody at the high-security Ila prison near Oslo, Behring Breivik, 32, is scheduled to go on trial on April 16.

Monday, for the first time since his arrest on July 22, he was permitted access to the media, in accordance with an Oslo court ruling.

A psychiatric evaluation of the confessed killer concluded late last month that he suffered from "paranoid schizophrenia".

If confirmed by a panel of experts and the Oslo court, that conclusion will most likely mean Behring Breivik cannot go to prison but instead will be sent to a closed psychiatric institution for treatment.

According to the prosecutor in the case, the right-wing extremist was "offended" by the psychiatric evaluation's conclusions, which have also met criticism in the Scandinavian country.

On July 22, Behring Breivik, who claimed to be on a crusade against multi-culturalism and the "Muslim invasion" of Europe, first set off a car bomb outside government buildings in Oslo, killing eight people.

After that, he went to the island of Utoeya, some 40km northwest of Oslo, where, disguised as a police officer, he spent nearly an hour and a half methodically shooting and killing another 69 people attending a summer camp, most of them teenagers.

While acknowledging the facts, Behring Breivik has refused to plead guilty.

For a psycho - he certainly had it all well planned - I say he should be sent to a normal prison and let the other prisoners deal with him.

If I would have been running the show, at the time of his arrest, it would have been clearly understood, that he was to be accidently shot and killed during his arrest...

I am the one who has always been against capital punishment. But this guy almost made me think otherwise. Killing 77 people and having no remorse – That is very sick. I do not think he is a nut job. This was a very well planed murder, No doubt.

The guy feels no remorse and as is people who pass a polygraph test due to a genuine lack of remorse he may not be found guilty.

Just a sad little man, who obviously got all his training and ideas from watching movies and playing video games, killing him wont prove a point, but having him watch as his family is hunted down the same way he hunted his victims might.

This is one of many of these killings I fear. Multi-Culturalism doesn't work and refugees who have come into countries unlawfully will be hated for what they have done. The Sudanese here in Australia are already voicing their disagreement with what the Government is doing with "boat people" by allowing them into the community without the proper processing. Watch and wait. We will be a 3rd World Country with a huge problem.

At least the victims died a quick death wereas Anders tragically suffers from paranoid schitaphrenia and horribly endures a life of hell. I wish Anders the very best in his recovery.

You can already see the unravelling of the failed multicultural experiment in Australia. When we were simply multiracial and people came here to enjoy the Australian way of life we were fine now they just come for the handouts and lax gov. attitude to their belligerence.

Saying that, what this man did was despicable and along with people like Martin Bryant he shouldn't still be breathing.

This is such a sad story and this mad man (which apparently he is) should not have access to the media to spread his message of hate, and of course, he has his supporters, as shown by comments on this very site. War and murder are NEVER justifiable.

well, Sicerely, I don't like the multi-culturism or islam invasion however those are not reason to kill anybody and I do not agree kill anybody, nowdays multi-culturism has been a crease dramatically in europe fault of the leaders of Europe and the Third World does not solve the problem of poverty, This man certainly has mental problems.

Once proven guilty, he should get the death penalty. If he has no remorse for the 77 people he murdered, then society should have no remorse for him as well. An eye for an eye the old testament says. Sometimes, the old ways work best.

Cant we have a common culture here an Austrailan culture first which is made up of parts of all the cultures of the people that make Australia a great place to live. What I object to is importing subcultures like Islam which is determined not to co exist with anyone else.

Psychiatric treatment a big waste of time for someone who has no remorse , they should do the same China does, a bullet in the back of the head,
