An immigration centre mental health nurse says being 'locked up' is driving asylum seekers mad.
An immigration centre mental health nurse says the system is driving asylum seekers mad.
Ena Grigg worked as a mental health nurse at Darwin's Northern Immigration Centre and described the experience of working in the system as "depressing".
"Being locked in a prison, not knowing when you are going to get out ... is driving these people mad," Ms Grigg told ABC Television on Thursday night.
Instances of suicidality and self-harm were a daily occurrence, with Ms Grigg witnessing people writing things on the wall with their own blood.
"They are frustrated, they are hurting, they need support and sustenance like the rest of us," she said.
"When I see what we do to these people I think we're just as bad as their countries are."
When she raised her concerns Ms Grigg said she was literally told to "harden up".
The government's mental health adviser Louise Newman said there was a high staff turnover at the centres and the potential impact of a higher level of arrivals was concerning.
College of Mental Health Nurses spokeswoman Kim Ryan said services provided at the centres were not ideal and left mental health workers feeling compromised.
A Department of Immigration spokesman told the ABC people in the centres had the same standard of access as people in the community.

It's just worrying that a supposedly qualified mental health nurse can be conned so easily by these illegal economic migrants. This chick needs to be reassigned somewhere less demanding. Like scrubbing toilets.

The reason alot of the illegals are going mad is because they are all so inter bred,among the people who come out legally there is a large amount of there is very large amount with mental health issues so its not because they are in detention they will use that because they have been told what to do and what to say.the people who injure themselves take it on step further

Silly labor sods all tossing and mouthing off, as if unaware they are todays clowns, tomorrows collateral damage, the next days scandal and infamy in the press and the last day with karma overcoming them.
