Hundreds of thousands of Syrians took to the streets on Friday to protest against President Bashar al Assad, according to reports.
Activists and residents said Syrian forces shot dead four people in a continuing crackdown that has provoked Western and Arab League sanctions to isolate Damascus.

The killings reportedly took place after midday prayers in the eastern city of Deir al Zour and in Homs - a hotbed of opposition to four decades of Assad family rule.

Demonstrators are urging Arab leaders to move quickly to try to end the violence, saying the Arab League's delays are allowing the Assad regime more time to kill.

"The Arab League is killing us," read some of the banners written in Arabic.

The 22-member League has proposed a peace plan, suspended Syria's membership and imposed sanctions but has not been able to agree on next steps after Syria refused to allow in monitors to ensure compliance with the peace proposal.

It was supposed to meet on Saturday but an Arab League diplomat said divisions among member nations over what to do next have forced a delay.

Instead, a smaller group of five Arab foreign ministers tasked with overseeing the implementation of the body's demands on Syria will meet in Doha, Qatar, he said.

Meanwhile, In Homs, 200,000 people joined a protest march, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Footage uploaded to a social media website showed a mock gallows where five effigies were hanging, including one of President Assad.

It is not possible to verify the number of protesters because Syria has barred most independent journalists, but if true it is one the biggest turnouts for several weeks.

In another video uploaded on Friday, a military vehicle appears to race through a deserted street in Homs and fire randomly around it.

Repeated and relentless gunfire is audible throughout the video and the vehicle is visible briefly as it speeds past a house.

The videos claim to show mass protests in both Homs and Deraa, two cities central to the movement against President Assad's rule.

In Deraa a placard says in Arabic the "Arab League is killing us," referring to what is perhaps seen as feet-dragging on the part of the pan-Arab group.

Another Deraa video purportedly shows a Syrian army tank preventing Muslims praying at a mosque.

President Assad has refused to stand down despite nine months of protests against his rule and what the United Nations estimates to be 5,000 deaths.
