Trump Honors Sen. Graham as Warrior, Patriot, Friend

President Donald Trump on Tuesday hailed the late Sen. Lindsey Graham as an unwavering patriot, legislative powerhouse, and cherished friend whose devotion to America defined more than three decades of public service.
Delivering the eulogy at a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral, Trump said Lindsey Graham's life embodied service to the nation and that he "died doing the work he was born to do."
Lindsey Graham died July 11 from an aortic dissection at age 71. Before the memorial service, his casket lay in state at the U.S. Capitol. Funeral services in Columbia, South Carolina, and Pickens County, South Carolina, are set for Wednesday.
"Today, we gather in the deepest gratitude and profound sorrow to honor a beloved friend, a devoted brother, a respected statesman, a giant of the United States Senate, and a true American original who left us much too soon," Trump said in remarks that aired live on Newsmax and the free Newsmax2 streaming platform.
Calling him "the one and only Lindsey Graham," Trump praised the South Carolina Republican's political instincts, saying, "Nothing of consequence happened in this Capitol without Lindsey Graham knowing about it.
"Nothing of significance happened anywhere in the world without Lindsey Graham having a view on it."
Trump highlighted the late senator's rise from rural South Carolina, where his parents operated a bar and pool hall, to becoming one of the Senate's most influential Republicans.
He also recounted how Lindsey Graham became guardian to his younger sister, Darline, after both of their parents died while he was still in college, calling it the accomplishment the late senator valued most.
"He later said that for all his achievements — and he had many — his proudest accomplishment in life was how well Darline turned out," Trump said, adding that he believed Lindsey Graham would be "beaming with pride" to see his sister, Sen. Darline Graham Nordone, continue his legacy of public service.
The president credited the late senator with helping secure record military funding, championing border security, shepherding passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and leading the Senate confirmation fight for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
"I believe it was Lindsey's perhaps finest hour," Trump said of Lindsey Graham's defense of Kavanaugh during the confirmation hearings.
Trump also described him as a staunch advocate of American military strength.
"He had unwavering faith in the righteousness of American power and prayer," Trump said. "He was extremely hawkish.
"I will tell you, he never saw a war that he didn't like. Only his true friends would understand that. But he wanted it for the good of our country."
The president mixed humor with remembrance, recalling their rocky relationship during the 2016 Republican presidential primary after he publicly shared the late senator's cellphone number.
''Back in 2016, Lindsey said something rather nasty on [my] flight to becoming the next president of the United States,'' Trump said. ''So, naturally I did something that I shouldn't have done.
"I shared his personal cellphone number with the millions of people that happened to be watching that particular day.
''As I made a speech, a very important speech. I remember the number. ... If anybody wants to give it a shot. His phone exploded.
He said, 'I had that number for 20 years.' His phone totally … I don't know what he did with it, but it exploded. ''That was the beginning of a friendship in a way. But it was Lindsey who had the last laugh because while I blew up his phone for one day, we became great friends and Lindsey did not stop calling me for the next 10 years.''
Trump also reminisced about golfing with Lindsey Graham, joking that he and Annika Sorenstam once defeated him and Gary Player.
''Can you believe that? Annika played very well that day, actually,'' Trump said, drawing laughter. ''But right to the end, Lindsey carried in his golf bag the putter that once belonged to his dad and he carried it with him, with class and with a ring that was so beautiful of his mother.
''And they were laying right at his bedside the night he died. They were there. He had them with him at all times from that pool hall where his parents raised him to the halls of the United States Senate, where he was respected and loved.''
Closing the eulogy, Trump said Lindsey Graham "never quit" and never lost the optimism that defined his public life.
"For 71 years, Lindsey Graham was strong and steadfast as a brother, a senator, a warrior, and a patriot," Trump said. "And now he wears the crown of life in heaven, reunited with his parents and reunited with his Lord. ... Lindsey, we love you.
"God bless you. We will always be with you."
