Big Tech's $5 Trillion AI Debt: Big Enough to Fail?

Massive artificial intelligence data-center projects could stall as Big Tech’s opaque financing commitments collide with falling technology shares, Wall Street analysts warn.
Second-quarter reports from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta — along with Oracle’s latest disclosures — may begin revealing cracks in an AI buildout whose full financial burden is difficult for investors to measure, says Mitch Feierstein, CEO of Glacier Environmental Fund Ltd. and author of “Planet Ponzi.”
Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Oracle carried $1.65 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments tied largely to data-center leases, graphics processing unit supply contracts, and servers, according to a Nikkei analysis of recent financial statements.
That exceeded the roughly $1.35 trillion in debt Nikkei counted on their balance sheets.
