Rubio to Host Global Summit on Far-Left Terrorism

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is bringing together officials from more than 70 countries in Washington on Thursday as the Trump administration intensifies its effort to build an international coalition against what it calls the growing threat of transnational far-left terrorism.
The State Department expanded the ministerial after what it described as overwhelming interest from foreign governments, saying the meeting will help coordinate efforts to confront far-left extremist groups operating across national borders.
A briefing document obtained by ABC News says the threat has not received the attention it deserves from the international community.
"For too long this threat has remained a blind spot in the international community's counterterrorism focus, underestimated and under-resourced, despite the danger it poses," the document states.
According to the briefing, law enforcement and counterterrorism officials have identified a "clear trend" of "globally networked, politically-motivated terrorists — particularly far-left terrorists" increasingly resorting to "organized, deadly violence to advance their political objectives."
The Trump administration says Thursday's meeting is intended to lay the groundwork for "coordinated action" against international organizations "seeking to implement an extreme political vision through intimidation and coordinated campaigns of terror."
The State Department initially planned to invite about 60 countries but announced on X last week that the event would be expanded because of "overwhelming interest" from nations "working to combat the growing international threat of far-left violence."
A State Department official told ABC that invitations were ultimately extended to over 10 more countries, bringing attendance to more than 70 delegations.
The summit marks the latest step in the Trump administration's push to elevate the fight against far-left extremism as a key component of its global counterterrorism strategy.
Some outside groups have questioned that emphasis.
A 2025 analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that while left-wing violence in the United States has increased over the past decade, "it has risen from very low levels and remains much lower than historical levels of violence carried out by right-wing and jihadist attackers."
The report also said it remains "important to resource all dimensions of the terrorism threat."
