Meadows Defies Subpoena as Jan. 6 Panel Threatens Contempt

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows defied a subpoena Friday and did not appear for a deposition before a House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, a move that is likely to trigger a contempt vote against the former Republican congressman.

CNN, citing sources familiar with the investigation, reported Meadows did not appear. The news outlet said committee staffers had been prepared to go forward with the interview and waited in a room on Capitol Hill with a stenographer, but started to leave the room minutes after the deadline passed.

The Jan. 6 panel had given Meadows until Friday to comply with the September subpoena and appear for a deposition, but his lawyer said that his client has a “sharp legal dispute” with the committee as former President Donald Trump has claimed executive privilege over the testimony.
