Why China just threatened Australia, insulted Britain, and cut Canadian imports

Advancing his global ambitions, Xi Jinping this week threatened three of America's closest allies.
The threats illustrate Xi's desire to shape a new international order of feudal mercantilism with Beijing at the top. Xi is willing to do whatever it takes to get the world to accept that order. And that means pressuring foreign governments that obstruct Chinese economic, military, and intelligence encroachment.
Hence the state media editorial on Thursday by the propaganda newspaper Global Times. The editorial warned that "Any country that follows the US in order to hurt China should pay the price no matter how nicely they talk." The editorial added that "China should keep firmly in mind that Australia took the lead in boycotting Huawei." The Global Times also lambasted Britain. "We pity the U.K. ... the UK's independence now seems weaker than its former colony India." China's fury centers on Western constraint of China's telecommunications-intelligence firm Huawei.
Also on Thursday, Reuters reported China's suspension of imports from two Canadian pork producers. Health concerns aside, this is China's latest punishment of Canada for detaining a Huawei executive on a U.S. extradition warrant.
For the world, the lesson here is clear: China plays very aggressive if it believes doing so is necessary. Indeed, Beijing's thinly veiled aggression here speaks volumes about the nature of Xi's authoritarian regime. Saying that "China should keep firmly in mind that Australia took the lead in boycotting Huawei," Xi's propagandists are basically saying Australia will be punished.
