Angry liberals should shut up about impeachment

When the next Congress is officially sworn into session in January, you can bet your bottom dollar that House Democrats will leverage their newly-acquired majority to make President Trump’s life a living nightmare. Democrats like Reps. Adam Schiff of California, Jerrold Nadler of New York, Maxine Waters of California, and Elijah Cummings of Maryland have a stack of subpoena forms on their desks ready to be filled out – if they haven’t been filled out already. Trump, who has been able to count on his Republican poodles to block inquiries into his administration’s conduct, will become discombobulated trying to keep track of all the investigations.
Responsible Democrats, however, are unlikely to support or initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump as long as they don’t possess clear, substantiated, and compelling evidence that the president (or the president’s campaign advisers) colluded with the Russians during the 2016 campaign or attempted to obstruct justice. Democratic lawmakers have said as much in public -- even those who voted for articles of impeachment last year. All of a sudden, with Democrats claiming the House majority, they no longer seem interested in rushing a vote.
Senior Democrats like incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and incoming Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler get it. They understand that impeachment is the most serious remedy to punishing a president who breaks the law or abuses the power of his office. Impeaching a president is not something to be taken lightly; as was illustrated in the saga over former President Bill Clinton’s tryst with Monica Lewinsky, impeachment can completely grind government to a halt, split a country apart, and create a constitutional crisis in its own right.

Until such a time, the raging liberals bottled up with anger should do us all a favor and stop barking. Maybe they can use the time between now and the end of Mueller’s investigation to educate themselves about what impeachment is – and more importantly, what it is not.
