Death toll nearly doubles in aftermath of Indonesia tsunami

The death toll of the tsunami that battered Indonesia over the weekend nearly doubled to 429 confirmed dead Tuesday — as authorities vowed to start work on a new disaster warning system next year.
Installation of a new structure of buoys capable of detecting tsunamis caused by undersea landslides is set to start in 2019, a spokesman for Indonesia’s Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology told the BBC in a report published Tuesday. The nation of islands once had a network of tsunami-detecting buoys but they haven’t been working since 2012, officials admitted Monday.
A landslide caused by eruptions of the Anak Krakatau volcano — located in the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra — is believed to have sent huge waves crashing into coastal communities on both islands Saturday night. More than 1,400 were injured.
