Pope Calls for Political Solution to Syria Conflict After U.S. Announces Pullout

The pope’s annual Christmas speech traditionally calls for peace around the world

ROME—Pope Francis Tuesday called for a political solution to the civil war in Syria, less than a week after President Trump abruptly announced his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from the country.

The pope’s remarks came in his annual Christmas speech “Urbi et Orbi”—“to the city [of Rome] and the world”—which is traditionally a survey of trouble spots and a call for peace around the world.
