The battle of Charlottesville: The center must hold

Charlottesville wasn’t about the statue. Self-proclaimed “white nationalists” have been using the Robert E. Lee monument as the pretext for a series of rallies to win attention and build their ranks. And the organizers are eager to bring in white supremacists, the Klan, neo-Nazis and their ilk.

The alt-right is out to play the same identity-politics game as the left. The overwhelming majority of Trump voters are sick of that whole game — of the politically correct moral posturing and censorship and the endless quest for new battles to provide the “wins” to keep the activist bandwagon rolling on.
They see the Charlottesville terrorist as fundamentally the same as the one who opened fire on that House Republican baseball practice: people warring on America itself.
Healthy democratic politics is about finding practical resolutions of our differences. Left or right, those who aim to divide us into warring camps are cancers on our politics.
