Australian government fails to provide emergency advice for citizens despite pledging ‘shoulder-to-shoulder’ alliance with US

THE Australian government has failed to confirm if any military or civil defence preparations are underway for a nuclear attack involving North Korea, despite the Prime Minister’s insistence Australia is “joined at the hip” with the US as a military ally.

The Attorney-General’s Department, Department of Defence, Prime Minister’s Department and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade all failed to provide advice for Australian citizens in the event of a worst-case scenario despite inquiries made over three weeks ago by news.com.au.

On Wednesday President Trump praised North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for his “wise decision” in apparently leaving the door open to halt tests. Official advice from diplomatic leaders in the US states the threat level has not changed, with Guam’s Homeland Security and Office of Civil Defence saying “tensions have eased or at least been delayed” in recent days.

But despite the rhetorical climb down, emergency leaders in Guam, Hawaii and Japan have been preparing citizens in the case of nuclear attack with drills and emergency advice in recent weeks amid fears of a miscalculation or outright assault.

Guam’s Civil Defence office has issued downloadable fact sheets warning citizens to “make a plan, build a kit, stay calm”. It includes tips such as playing simulation games with children, filling out a form with emergency contacts and a checklist of what to keep nearby including cash, water, blankets and duct tape.
