FOREIGN Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said North Korea’s “provocative behaviour” was discussed at length in her first face-to-face meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
News Corp Australia understands Ms Bishop put forward ideas on how to handle the growing threat from Pyongyang, which she said is “a priority for the Trump administration.”
North Korea tested a missile earlier this month and its nuclear weapons program has progressed in arsenal size, bomb strength, and missile technology.

“We see the regime’s provocative behaviour as a threat not only regionally on the Korean peninsula, but also globally and we see it as a direct threat to Australia,” she said, a week after
touring the demilitarised zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea.
Other topics of discussion included the South China Sea and terrorism in South-East Asia.
“I had a very lengthy meeting this morning with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that lasted almost an hour,” Ms Bishop said.
“It was a very detailed discussion on a number of issues.”

The meeting follows a number of discussions in South Korea the previous week with the US national security adviser and command about further sanctions on North Korea.
China recently suspended all coal imports from North Korea for the rest of the year. The ban is in line with UN Security Council sanctions imposed in November 2016 in response to North Korea’s fifth nuclear test in August last year.
When asked about Australia’s position on the South China Sea, Ms Bishop reiterated that our position has been consistent.
“We note that we’re not a claimant state; we don’t take sides with territorial disputes.”
The comments come after retired defence chief Angus Houston warned Australia should not participate in freedom of navigation operations within 12 nautical miles of China’s artificial islands in the South China Sea.

He has also criticised the push to blockade China’s artificial islands, saying that would invite a “sharp response” from Beijing.
Asked whether the US administration had applied pressure on Australia to do more in the region, Ms Bishop said “there’s been a recognition that Australia has committed to increasing our defence budget to two per cent of our GDP and that’s been appreciated by the United States.”
Ms Bishop said Mr Tillerson was very focused on some of the challenges facing South-East Asia, including the rise of terrorism.
The Jakarta bombings in January 2016 signalled the growing reach of IS into South-East Asia.
“As IS comes under more pressure in the Middle East, it wants to see more attacks elsewhere,” said terrorism expert, Sidney Jones.
