Turkey coup attempt: President accuses foreign governments of possible involvement as state of emergency imposed

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused unnamed foreign countries of possible involvement in last week's coup attempt and announced a three-month state of emergency.

Mr Erdogan addressed the nation this morning (AEST) to declare that the "cleansing" of Turkey's military and public sector was ongoing.

Some 60,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the weekend's coup attempt, increasing tension across the country of 80 million that borders Syria's chaos and is a Western ally against Islamic State jihadists (IS).

About a third of Turkey's roughly 360 serving generals have been detained.

"We'll remain very determined in cleansing all of these institutions from these elements because it's very similar to cancer virus, it's like a metastasis that's going on in the body that's Turkey, that's this nation — and we'll clean it out," he said.
