Chris Harmer, senior naval analyst for the Institute of the Study of War, noted that the Chinese and Russians are spending money to close the military dominance gap of the United States. The Chinese though had been said to spend more than the Russians. More tellingly, China’s use of cyber theft had aid them in their development efforts. Harmer warned that today, the US is capable of losing 10-year worth of research and development in just 10 seconds of hacking, Kristina Wong of The Hill reports.
This closing of the weapons technology gap makes a US China ‘war’ more possible now than it was ever according to experts. Countries like Russia and China are leading the charge in pushing the reach of US military capabilities back from their doorsteps.
Reports came in that these two countries are improving their ballistic and cruise missile technologies to better target US ships and aircraft. This is in the effort to push US military threat away from conflict areas like the South China Sea and Baltic Sea. These technologies, experts say, are going to create “anti-access area-denial bubbles” that can threaten US ground and air operations.
Senior naval analyst in the Institute for the Study of War Chris Harmer pointed out that the Chinese and Russians are creating advanced air-to-air technologies. This includes, but not limited to, stealth technology. They are also developing advanced air-to-air radars, advanced aerodynamics, advanced air-to-air weapons and advanced air-to-ground weapons.
To deal with such threats, the Pentagon is closely working with allies like the UK to extend its reach. Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work stated that both counties’ forces to be interoperable in high-end fights from top to bottom. But many say that the US is not spending enough in research and development to keep the gap wide–an activity that the two rivals significantly do.
The National Interest’s Harry J. Kazianis said that the possibility of a US China War seems a little silly in the surface as the two nations have a two-way trade relationship going on worth at half a trillion dollars. There are maybe many mutual interests going on that point to the fact that war is not the most logical idea for both countries. The most logical or not though, war seems to be a human staple. Let’s just hope that leaders would find the costs of going to war is greater than its gains
