Foreign affairs: If you join fighting in Syria, Iraq, you're on your own

The foreign affairs department says it's aware of "various reports" that a Canadian-Israeli woman "was falsely reported kidnapped in Syria" and warned Canadians against travelling abroad to fight terrorists.

"Canadians travelling to Syria and Iraq, including those who travel there to join local campaigns in the fight against (ISIS), must do so at their own personal risk and must be aware that rescue missions in this dangerous area will not be conducted," spokesman François Lasalle said. "Anyone who wants to defend Canadian values and freedom on the world stage is encouraged to join the Canadian Armed Forces."

The government issued the statement Monday evening, after a post on Gill Rosenberg's Facebook page appeared to refute earlier reports that she had been captured by the Islamic State (ISIS).

"I'm totally safe and secure," the post — apparently from Rosenberg — reads. It also says Rosenberg doesn't have much access to the Internet, and so "can't reply regularly and only happened to have a chance to log in and see these bulls--- news stories. Ignore the reports I've been captured."

The government says it's still trying to confirm the facts.

Rosenberg, 31, joined Kurdish fighters last month in the fight against ISIS.

Concerns that Rosenberg had been kidnapped surfaced on Sunday, when the Jerusalem Post and ynetnews.com, the English-language version of Israel's largest and most popular news website, both reported ISIS had captured Rosenberg.

The reports led to a flurry of social media posts, apparently from people familiar with the conflict, saying the kidnapping reports were false.
