Libya at a standstill until Sirte falls

SIRTE, Libya — The fighters ran from building to building, ducking as weapons fire came in over the rooftops around them.

Shouting "Allahu Akbar (God is great)," they pounded nearby apartment blocks with machine gun fire in one of the few parts of Moammar Gadhafi's hometown they have yet to subdue.

" Mutassim is there," said Amran al Awaib, a rebel commander, referring to one of the sons of Libyan dictator Gadhafi.

"I hear him on the radio," said Amran al Awaib, a rebel commander. "I am sure he will fight till death. On the radio he says, 'Fight! Don't give up!'"

Libya is at a standstill until Sirte falls. The revolutionaries' temporary government, the National Transitional Council, says it will not call elections until eight months after the city is liberated.

Gadhafi had transformed the city on the Mediterranean where he was born into the seat of government power for Libya. Many of his most loyal supporters, as well as those who owed their government jobs to him, were here when the rebels took the capital of Tripoli.

For three weeks, anti-Gadhafi fighters have been trading bullets and shells with Gadhafi loyalists, who have been squeezed into the city's center. Rebels hope for victory soon.

"We've reached the point where we will be able to completely dominate Sirte in the next few days," interim Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Ahmed Bani said in Tripoli.

To the west, brigades from Misrata have been firing rockets and mortars from secured positions along the highway outside the city. But advances appear to lack planning. Young men in pickups race toward the city. They assemble and unleash rockets and fire heavy machine guns before retreating after coming under sustained attack.

"There are no leaders, and even if there are leaders, people are doing their own thing," said Ahmed Ibrahim, one of the revolutionary fighters.

The stalemate may soon be broken with the arrival eight days ago of fighters from Benghazi and other cities in the east. Many of the men are from units in the regular army that defected when the revolution began eight months ago. They say that they have military training and many have years of experience.

Their forward operating base is a lavish five-star hotel on the city's eastern edge. On Wednesday, the marble and mahogany foyer was filled with rebels in battle fatigues and carrying Kalashnikov automatic rifles.

Plumes of black smoke rose from apartment buildings clustered along the seacoast. Green flags flew on many rooftops, the symbol of the Gadhafi regime.

The rebel army has met stiff resistance from Sirte despite regular bombing from NATO and a worsening humanitarian situation within the city. There's been a steady flow of civilians out of the city in recent weeks as supplies of food and fuel run out and attacks worsen.

Gadhafi built up this onetime fishing village into a wealthy metropolis filled with hotels and conference centers where he hosted world leaders. Now, Gadhafi's son, Mutassim, is commanding well-armed fighters in a last stand to save his father's legacy, rebels say. They say this battle will expose the last vestiges of the regime.

"A lot of experienced people are in there," said Matthew van Dyke, a revolutionary fighter.
